Communications and Technology Director
Peter Byrley received his Ph.D. in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) where his research focused on the development of flexible nanoelectronics. He received a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from SUNY University at Buffalo (UB). During his sophomore year there, he discovered the UB ESW chapter and worked with them to develop a local park in a low income neighborhood. He found the hands-on training and teamwork extremely engaging.
Since then, he has worked in a variety of research areas including the development of algal turf scrubbers and the creation of simple transistors based on earth abundant materials. In the 2016-2017 academic year, he served as the Graduate Sustainability Liaison at UCR where he created a grant program for sustainable projects, put together a new Earth Week and worked with various campus committees to reach carbon neutrality goals by 2025. He is the 2016 Statewide University of California Grad Slam winner, previously served as a UC Climate Neutrality Fellow and has written several articles online to explain complex research to the public in the field of nanotechnology.
He looks forward to using all of his experiences to further grow the ESW community and to make sure all ESW communications are effective, engaging and represent the spirit of such a passionate organization.
