ESW-U Short Course: Biomimicry

April 12, 8:00pm to May 17, 9:00pm
Digital via Zoom

Overview

Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. In this short course, foundational concepts about biomimicry will be discussed including, but no limited to, "biomimicry design spiral", "Nature's Unifying Pattern", and "biological models". Students will not only get the valuable opportunity to lean and interact with expert instructors, but will also get to know and use the tools used to put biomimcry into practice. Special focus will be made on highlighting the association between biomimcry and other convergent sustainability tools such as life-cycle analysis (LCA), circular economy, Living Building Challenge, etc.

Speaker Bio

Megan Schuknecht, director of design challenges at the Biomimicry Institute, has spent the past 10 years bringing the fascinating and hopeful world of biomimicry to educators, students, and professionals all over the world. She spent her youth exploring the forests, creeks, and hedgerows of Wisconsin, and her extreme curiosity, passion for the natural world, and love of education eventually led her to work for the Biomimicry Institute. Megan currently leads the Institute’s Biomimicry Global Design Challenge and Biomimicry Accelerator programs, develops biomimicry educational tools and courses, and teaches in the field whenever possible. Megan graduated from Grinnell College with a BA in biology and earned an MS in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana-Missoula.

The course will run from April 12th to May 17th with 6 one-hour weekly web meetings Wednesdays at 7:00PM ET. These meetings are designed to provide a mix of active learning and instructor-led material. The anticiptated workload is roughly 10 hours total (2 per class). We will intentionally be flexible with the material covered based off student interests.
